"THE GENTLE WAR" -  2010    BUY CD

The latest release “The Gentle War” features their distinctive mix of dense rhythmic interactions and gentle melodic statements. The shape-shifting grooves of “Tailgater” and “Cute” are relentless while the meditative “Blues for the Space” and “Interlude” bring out some truly beautiful melodies.

The ten years of music making together has given the group a distinctly personal sound, filled with an array of engaging ideas presented with masterful technique. “The Gentle War” builds on concepts presented in their last release “Variations” but the resulting album is now more finely focused and intimate, and increasingly daring. Foran’s compositions shift and change with graceful clarity and accessibility while Parker’s works challenge the listener, taking on multiple styles and genres within a fraction of a second. Marchisella too contributes a piece, the elegant and reflective “Time”, a suitable balance to the intensity of the preceding tracks.

Recorded in the serene surrounds of Tallebudgera and then mixed in Minneapolis by Brent Sigmeth the resulting album is a bold step forward for the group, cementing their place as an ensemble with a truly individual approach to music making. As the title suggests, “The Gentle War” is simultaneously thunderous and hushed, and remarkably compelling.

"HEALTHY" - MISINTERPROTATO + TOPOLOGY       BUY CD ALBUM

The debut double ensemble album featuring two of Australia's most inventive musical ensembles.
“HEALTHY” is just that, the heathly combination of like musical minds. Consisting of a blend of works from composers in each ensemble the resulting album is breathaking.

Drummer John’s Parker’s dense rhythmic works “Healthy Lifestyle v3” and “Mean” are perfectly balanced with Saxophonist John Babbage’s alluring “Lost at Sea” and the textural “Generations”.
Misinterprotato pianist Sean Foran contributes the graceful “A New Beginning” and “That which is not fleeting”, a work which constantly surprises with it’s twist and turns. Topology Bassist Rob Davidsons’ “Round Roads” is a landscape of musical ideas, dense and complex yet filled with clarity of expression.
To round off the album an inventive arrangement of minimalist composer Steve Reichs’ “Clapping Music”, only without the clapping.
One could compare it to the sounds minimalist sounds of Michael Nyman, Terry Riley and Steve Reich, with a touch of Astor Piazolla, and the modern jazz influences of Pat Metheny.
Wrap this up in the visual, cinematic style of Bernard Hermann and the Cinematic Orchestra and you’re getting close. One thing is a certainty, these influences combine to create a sound that is incomparable not only in Australia, but internationally.

VARIATIONS (2007) - Jazzhead         BUY CD ALBUM

This release from the Brisbane piano trio with and intriguing name sounds even more classically influenced than their 2005 album “In is In”.
Pianist and leader Sean Foran has composed most of the pieces , with another three by drummer John Parker. Island of the Sun establishes a bossa-beat before the piano begins a running fugue like theme. This builds to a crashing crescendo of a solo followed by Pat Marchisella’s fast moving bass interlude, preceding a return to theme.
Several guest artists make an appearance: violin, viola, alto sax, plus Peter Knight’s moodily expressive trumpet on a introspective ballad Ascent.
A more energetiic approach is used on Chunk,  a jagged polyrhythmic exposition with free jazz style clashes between the instruments. The final track Labyrinth, is a completely improvised soundscape using prepared piano, sliding bass harmonics, and a busy but not overpowering drum kit.
A fine example of contemporary music in various tempos, incorporating a range of moods and drawing extensively on diverse classical references fused with 21st century jazz ideas.

"IN IS IN" - (2005), Jazzhead          BUY CD ALBUM

Much like their debut Now For The Free, Australia’s most forward-thinking contemporary jazz trio recorded their latest album over a livid and inspired live studio session. The result is an album that boldly walks the thin chalk-line between pulse-settling reflection and gloriously unhinged, hep-fuelled disorder.
Famed for their brash approach to composition and instrumentation, the Brisbane outfit make discriminating use of distortion, modified piano, cello and percussion within the bold framework of their original compositions.
As infinitely listenable as it is gallant and challenging, In Is In should, and will, find its way into the CD collection of anyone whose heart swells at the sound of something honest, joyful and brimming with life.
